Overview
The Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) regards the poultry sub-sector as the most commercialized of all Nigeria's agricultural sub-sectors with an estimated poultry production of over a billion tonnes of meat and 3.8 million eggs per year, with a standing population of 180 million birds. The CBN has provided financing to the poultry sub-sector through the following interventions:
- CACS/RSSF-DCRR (Autonomous Poultry)
- AGSMEIS (Out-growers Model)
- Tertiary Institutions Poultry Revival Scheme (TiPRES)
- Targeted Credit Facility.
Objective of the Initiative
The objectives of the initiative by the CBN include:
- To ensure that poultry production is increased.
- To reduce importation and end the smuggling of poultry products into Nigeria.
- To close the existing demand and supply gap as well as raise a new crop of agropreneurs in modern poultry production.
Other gains expected include sustainable domestic supply of eggs and poultry meat across the country; enhanced government revenue; and support for the Government's policies such as the Federal Government's ongoing school feeding programme.
