Alhaji Umaru Bello Girei  
Retired as Secretary to The Board - Served in the CBN from 11/23/2005 To 5/30/2010

Umaru Bello Girei was born on April 2, 1954 in Girei, Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa State. He attended Government Teachers College, Gombe between 1968 and 1972, where he won the College Award of academic distinction. During 1974-75, he attended the School of Basic Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and thereafter pursued a B.Sc Social Sciences degree (Political science, Economics and Sociology) programme from 1975-1978. After the National Service in Zaria, Kaduna State, he took appointment with the then Gongola State Advanced Teachers College, Jalingo, (now College of Education Jalingo) where he held several important positions, including the pioneer Academic Secretary of the College, Secretary to the Academic Board, the Admissions Committee and the Development Committee.

Alh. Girei proceeded to the University of Pittsburgh, United States of America in 1980, where he obtained the Masters degree in Public Administration (MPA) in 1982. He later returned to Nigeria and took up appointment with the University of Maiduguri as the pioneer Secretary of the School of Post-Graduate Studies. He also served as the Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor of the University, Head of the Registry Department at the then Modibbo Adama College (now Federal University of Technology, Yola). In 1987, Alhaji Girei moved to the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, as Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council. In addition, he was the Secretary of the Academic Board and other statutory committees of the Council. After his tenure as Registrar, Alhaji Girei proceeded on sabbatical leave, during which he served as Director of Administration at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola.

Alhaji Girei joined the Central Bank of Nigeria as Acting Director in March 2000 and deployed to the then Special Duties Department. He became a substantive Director in June 2002 and served in that capacity in the Administrative and General Services Departments, before his redeployment to the Corporate Secretariat in November, 2004 as Director. He is the Secretary to the Board of the Bank and its statutory committees. He is also the Secretary to the Committee of Governors (Management Committee).

He has attended a number of courses both in Nigeria and overseas. He is a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management , Member, Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria and Member of the Institute of Directors, Nigeria.

In 1860 the following system was in use: 40 Cowries formed a "String"; 50 Strings made a "head" and 10 heads comprised a "bag". In Lagos in 1865 one bag of 20,000 shells was exchanged for one or two English Pounds.
